WHAT IS ADDITION?

  • Addition means
    "putting numbers together to find the total or sum".
  • We use the plus sign (+) to add numbers.
  • It is one of the four basic operations in mathematics.

  • 0 + any number = that number
  • Any number + 0 = that number
  • Numbers can be added in any order. (Commutative Property)
    25 + 17 = 17 + 25
  • Adding more numbers is easy. (Associative Property)
    (15 + 25) + 10 = 15 + (25 + 10)
    40 + 10 = 15 + 35 = 50

TYPES OF ADDITION
1 ADDITION WITHOUT REGROUPING (No Carry)
When the sum of digits in a column is 9 or less.
2 ADDITION WITH REGROUPING (With Carry)
When the sum of digits in a column is 10 or more.
HOW TO ADD WITHOUT REGROUPING
  1. Write numbers in columns (place value aligned).
  2. Start adding from the ones place.
  3. Add tens, hundreds and so on.
  4. Write the sum.
Example:
HTO 325 +142

Ones: 5 + 2 = 7
Tens: 2 + 4 = 6
Hundreds: 3 + 1 = 4

So, 325 + 142 = 467
TIP: Always start from the rightmost column (ones place).
HOW TO ADD WITH REGROUPING
  1. Write numbers in columns.
  2. Add the ones place.
  3. If the sum is 10 or more, regroup.
  4. Add tens (include the regrouped tens).
  5. Continue for hundreds, thousands...
Example:

Ones: 8 + 5 = 13
Write 3, carry 1 ten
Tens: 7 + 6 + 1 = 14
Write 4, carry 1 hundred
Hundreds: 2 + 1 + 1 = 4
So, 278 + 165 = 443
TIP: Regroup 10 ones = 1 ten, 10 tens = 1 hundred...
