TYPES OF SUBTRACTION
HOW TO SUBTRACT WITHOUT REGROUPING
- Write numbers in columns (place value aligned).
- Start subtracting from the ones place.
- Then tens, hundreds...
- Write the difference.
Step-by-step:
Ones: 2 − 0 = 2
Tens: 3 − 1 = 2
Hundreds: 4 − 2 = 2
So, 432 − 210 = 222
TIP: Always line up the digits according to place value.
HOW TO SUBTRACT WITH REGROUPING
- Write numbers in columns.
- If a digit in the top row is smaller, borrow 1 from the next place value on the left.
- Subtract.
- Continue for all places.
Step-by-step:
Ones: 12 − 8 = 4 (We borrow 1 ten)
Tens: 9 − 5 = 4 (We borrowed 1 hundred)
Hundreds: 3 − 1 = 2
So, 402 − 158 = 244
TIP: Borrow (regroup) from the next place value on the left.
2-DIGIT SUBTRACTION
Example: 72 − 35
Step-by-step:
2 − 5 = 7 (borrowed)
7 − 3 = 4 (regrouped)
So, 72 − 35 = 37
3-DIGIT SUBTRACTION
Example: 643 − 321
Step-by-step:
3 − 1 = 2
4 − 2 = 2
6 − 3 = 3
So, 643 − 321 = 322
4-DIGIT SUBTRACTION
Example: 5,432 − 2,210
Step-by-step:
2 − 0 = 2
3 − 1 = 2
4 − 2 = 2
5 − 2 = 3
Total = 3,222
5-DIGIT SUBTRACTION
Example: 62,543 − 21,432
Step-by-step:
3 − 2 = 1
4 − 3 = 1
5 − 4 = 1
2 − 1 = 1
6 − 2 = 4
Total = 41,111
2-DIGIT SUBTRACTION
Example: 65 − 28
Step-by-step:
Ones: 15 − 8 = 7
Tens: 5 − 2 = 3
Total = 37
3-DIGIT SUBTRACTION
Example: 642 − 378
Step-by-step:
O: 12 − 8 = 4
T: 13 − 7 = 6
H: 5 − 3 = 2
Total = 264
4-DIGIT SUBTRACTION
Example: 7,402 − 2,185
Step-by-step:
O: 12 − 5 = 7
T: 9 − 8 = 1
H: 3 − 1 = 2
Th: 6 − 2 = 4
Total = 5,217
5-DIGIT SUBTRACTION
Example: 83,256 − 47,389
712111416
83256
−47389
35867
Step-by-step:
O: 16 − 9 = 7
T: 14 − 8 = 6
H: 11 − 3 = 8
Th: 12 − 7 = 5
TTh: 7 − 4 = 3
Total = 35,867
